On April 3, one of my heroes and internationally acclaimed Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was detained at the Beijing airport by local the authorities. At that time his papers and computers were seized from his gallery/studio. Ai Weiwei has not been seen since. As a result members of the international arts community have expressed concern for Ai’s freedom and have created a petition via change.org for users to sign. Please take a minute, sign the petition. Ai Weiwei should not spend another minute detained.
Ai is best known for his design contribution in the construction of the Bejing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympics and his Sunflower Seeds exhibit at the Tate Modern in 2010. For several years Ai he has fought against government corruption which is widespread and prevalent in China today. If you’re unfamiliar with Ai’s work, Frontline recently aired a story about Ai. If you have 20 minutes to spare, the Frontline spot is truly inspiring.
