Brilliant Designers are not Brilliant Coders

Brilliant Designers are not Brilliant Coders

Yes it’s true and on the flipside, developers who are great at design are not great at code. I’ve been in the industry for two decades. I’ve met many super talents but have yet to meet someone who is equally talented at design and code.

I can appreciate and understand the value of a combined skill set but if you truly wants to be good at your craft, focus on your craft.

Don’t get me wrong designers should learn about code. A good designer should understand the medium she is designing for. The same holds true for developers and design. Understanding the basics fosters respect. That is a good thing.

A good designer should understand the medium she is designing for.

Lastly, if you’re in the job market, be leery of companies who require designers who are equally good at code. Companies with those types of expectations tend to pump out mediocre work. There’s nothing worse than mediocrity.

A recent post by Julius Tarng via Medium inspired this article. Tarng’s argument is much more in-depth and goes on to explain an array of reasons companies should rethink expectations.

Here’s what we really need: designers who can design the hell out of things and developers who can develop the hell out of things. And we need them all to work together seamlessly.

Thanks for the great article Julius!
