How to Save an Adobe Illustrator CC PDF with Live Hyperlinks

How to Save an Adobe Illustrator CC PDF with Live Hyperlinks

how to create a link in a pdfThis is a quick and super simple How-to on creating hyperlinks in a PDF using Adobe illustrator (CC). I’ve run into this issue multiple times and most of the videos, tutorials etc., are way over-complicated. Creating text links and graphics can be done in 4 easy steps!!

Note: Illustrator automatically converts any URL with http:// in front
of it into a live link.

To create a text link without http:// is simple.

  1. First create your text. Then create a separate line of text with the full hyperlink.
  2. Resize the hyperlink text using kerning, scaling ect., to approximately the same size as your text link (like the “www.pixelube.com” example above).
  3. Now match the hyperlink text with the background color of your document and place it behind the intended link– you’re essentially creating an invisible link and placing it behind your text.
  4. Output your PDF. Done.

Create a graphic that is linked

  1. First create your object/graphic. Then create a separate line of text with the full hyperlink.
  2. Resize the hyperlink text using kerning, scaling ect., to approximately the same width as your graphic then duplicate and stack the hyperlink multiple times to create and mimic the graphic’s shape (like the social graphics in the example above).
  3. Now match the hyperlink text with the background color of your document and place it behind the graphic that you would like to link–you’re essentially creating an invisible hot spot with multiple links.
  4. Output your PDF. Done.

Hope this helps!!
