{"id":3542,"date":"2012-07-02T10:32:31","date_gmt":"2012-07-02T17:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pixelube.com\/work\/c4c\/?p=3542"},"modified":"2012-07-02T10:32:31","modified_gmt":"2012-07-02T17:32:31","slug":"11-university-of-washington-professors-recognized-for-successful-commercialization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pixelube.com\/work\/c4c\/11-university-of-washington-professors-recognized-for-successful-commercialization\/","title":{"rendered":"11 University of Washington Professors Recognized for Successful Commercialization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pixelube.com\/work\/c4c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Marsha-Linehan3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pixelube.com\/work\/c4c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Marsha-Linehan3-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Marsha-Linehan3\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3546\" \/><\/a>University of Washington President Michael Young today announced the appointment of 11 new members to the university\u2019s prestigious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pixelube.com\/work\/c4c\/for-researchers\/entrepreneurial-faculty-fellows\/\" target=\"_blank\">Presidential Entrepreneurial Faculty Fellows (EFFs) program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s appointees, who will join seven continuing Faculty Fellows, have been selected for their success in translating their research into products and therapies, initiating groundbreaking programs for translation, or collaborating with industry, as well as their ability and motivation to share their knowledge with other UW researchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe we\u2019re at the early stages of a new wave of entrepreneurial innovation at the university, led by our faculty leaders who are models of energy and imagination,\u201d said UW President Michael Young. \u201cThese 11 professors are remarkable examples of that innovative spirit, and their contributions to our university and the state are extraordinary.\u201d<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In their two-year terms, the new Fellows may serve as mentors to other UW faculty, researchers, and staff with entrepreneurial aspirations, and share their experiences with student and faculty groups at entrepreneurial events organized on campus.\u00a0 Fellows will also advise the UW Center for Commercialization on programs.<\/p>\n<p>The program\u2019s awardees for 2012 include: \u00a0Dan Weld, Thomas J. Cable \/ WRF professor of computer science and engineering; \u00a0David Baker, professor of biochemistry; Carl Bergstrom, professor of biology; Dr. Felix Chew professor of radiology; Guozhong Cao, Boeing-Steiner professor of materials science and engineering; Shaoyi Jiang, Boeing-Roundhill professor of chemical engineering and adjunct professor of bioengineering; Vipin Kumar, associate professor, mechanical engineering; Marsha Linehan, professor of psychology and director of Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics; Dr. David Linker, associate professor of medicine, division of cardiology, and adjunct professor of bioengineering; Dr. Bonnie Ramsey, professor of medicine, division of pediatrics; and Patrick Stayton, Washington Research Foundation endowed professor of bioengineering.<\/p>\n<p>The Entrepreneurial Fellows program is one element of a larger campaign to foster an entrepreneurial culture across the university and to spin out an increasing number of companies built around UW research. \u00a0Earlier this year, President Young announced a commercialization initiative with the goal of doubling the number of start-ups produced by the UW over the next three years.\u00a0 In February, the university unveiled a new business incubator on campus, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pixelube.com\/work\/c4c\/start-ups\/new-ventures-facility\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Commercialization New Ventures Facility<\/a>, that provides the space for faculty and students to work alongside successful and experienced Washington entrepreneurs on UW spin-outs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to working with our Fellows this year to continue to inspire UW\u2019s fledgling entrepreneurs, to increase the number of innovations moving from lab to useful implementation, and to establish UW as one of the nation\u2019s leading research universities with entrepreneurial impact,\u201d said Vice Provost and Executive Director of the Center for Commercialization Linden Rhoads.<\/p>\n<p>Returning for the second year of their two-year appointment are seven 2011 program awardees: Daniel Chiu, assistant professor of chemistry; Joel Durand, professor of music; Oren Etzioni, professor of computer science and engineering; Vikram Jandhyala, professor of electrical engineering; Carla Grandori, research associate professor of pharmacology; Rodney J.Y.
