A paper presented this month at the Association for Computing Machinery\u2019s International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing showed results that came within 5 percent of commercial devices, meaning it already meets the medical community\u2019s standards for accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a big need in the pulmonary community to make testing cheaper and more convenient,\u201d said lead researcher Shwetak Patel, a UW assistant professor of computer science and engineering and of electrical engineering. \u201cOther people have been working on attachments for the mobile phone that you can blow into. We said, \u2018Let\u2019s just try to figure out how to do it with the microphone that\u2019s already there.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/bioe\/research\/coulter\/research_coulter_index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Coulter Foundation<\/a> will fund more clinical testing with patients of varying ages and lung health, and help the team to seek Food and Drug Administration approval.
