The extraction and processing of rare-earths are, however, a health and environmental hazard, and its supply has been unstable in recent years. LumiSands develops and manufacturers silicon  nanoparticles as an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative for rare-earth phosphors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pixelube.com\/work\/c4c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/LumiSands_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"LumiSands_02\" width=\"216\" height=\"143\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4700\" \/>LumiSands is a project of researchers Chang-Ching Tu and Ji-Hao Hoo, formerly of the <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/mse\/\" target=\"_blank\">UW Material Science and Engineering<\/a> department.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Science Foundation has granted a UW technology project LumiSands an award of $150 thousand to demonstrate the commercial viability of its silicone nanoparticles.
